Our heritage is unlike any other in the wealth management industry.
John P. Calamos, Sr., our founder, is a self-made man, coming from humble beginnings as the son of a Greek immigrant living above his family’s grocery store in Chicago. He knew hard work and the value of education. He was the first of his family to attend college in the United States, and he earned an undergraduate degree in economics and an M.B.A. in finance.
John made a pivotal life decision when he volunteered for military service. He ascended to the rank of Major in the U.S. Air Force, and he served as a combat pilot during the Vietnam War. It was at this stage of his life that he manifested some of the guiding principles found in our firm today—to operate with precision, take no unnecessary risk and work with honor.
A natural curiosity drove John to develop what would become his enduring legacy. In the 1970s, the investment world responded to John’s pioneering work in the strategic application of convertible securities as a means to mitigate investment risk. Investors believed in John’s work, and that confidence led to the establishment of an investment firm where he could apply his investment philosophies to manage the assets of others. Today, Calamos Investments manages billions in assets on behalf of individuals and institutions around the world through mutual funds, separately managed accounts, and other U.S.- and foreign-based investment instruments.
As a hands-on leader, John takes pride and feels a sense of duty in managing the assets of clients. His first clients were, in fact, his friends—many made from his days in the Air Force. As John’s wealth as a prominent investor grew, he wanted to share his passion and assist family and friends around him, not only with prudent investment advice, but with all aspects that managing wealth entails. Calamos Wealth Management grew from that desire, and today we still count many of John’s friends and family among our clients.
